Daily Stuff 2-29-12 Leap Day

Hi, folks!

Happy Leap Day! High Surf Advisory at 22 feet!

I got waked up thinking I was hearing crunching cellophane and I startled thinking I was running late and Tempus was already up. It was sleet on the window and I heard the wind moan through a window that’s only open a crack. It’s been messy all night. There was sleet/hail rattling on the porch roof last night and there’s still quite a bit of wind, gusting up to 20mph. This started in the late morning, yesterday, as the winds picked up and there was slashing rain and hail, and one awesome lightning bolt that shot across the sky from the coast range out over the ocean, that was low enough to make the flash and bang almost simultaneous. The whole roomful of folks lifted off their chairs, even though the wind had been howling and rumbling around the resort for hours by that point.

It’s getting light. Supposedly sunrise is in about 15 minutes, but we certainly won’t see it. …and already there’ve been birds on the feeders.

I never got out with my dibble yesterday because just as I got the newsletter done the rain started to pour down. It’s been like that ever since. 3 separate times I got ready to go out and by the time the door was open I would have been insane to venture out to dig. I worked instead on getting the website updated with the info on the psychic fair and then still trying to figure out where the yahoo spam is coming from. I didn’t get a solid answer, but one account has been deleted. We’ll see if that does it. Let me know if you’re still seeing spam, please!

I did finish the schedule for the weekend. Of course it tends to “wiggle” later, making us run on PST…Pagan Standard Time. I’ll do my best to keep things moving, though, and the schedule is below. I’m working on a write-up that I’m going to try to finish before I leave that will go up on the website. The link is up on the home page, but the descriptions are minimal, still. www.ancientlight.info

Tempus did the food shopping and when he got home I had to run right back out the door for the Rural Tourism Studio Visioning session. I’m not all that thrilled about what was accomplished. I walked in and told Tempus, “Well, that was a waste of 3 hours….” I was actually there for 5, but the larger part of it was spent listening to one of the presenters doing a lot of telling us how wonderful this was going to be and playing a “game”, whose point was only to “prove” to us that we need to think outside the box. We did spend an hour working on various scenarios with specific “what if” end points. …and Rumi’s food was awesome, as usual. I had a salmon sandwich and a lovely salad.

Today we’re getting into some details, but… 9am to 4pm doing that is going to be a *very* long day.

The schedule for this weekend’s Psychic Fair is:
Friday 3/2
2-6pm - Readers available
Saturday 3/3
11am-6pm - Readers available
11am - Herbs Workshop, special session, "Infusions, Decoctions and Tinctures - What the Bleep are those?"

3pm - Sewing Workshop, bring a project or make a sachet
4pm - Making at Witch Hat ($5 for materials)

Sunday 3/4
10am-Noon - Wicca 101
Noon to 4pm - Readers available

The shop is closed Tuesday/Wednesday. Winter hours – Thursday through Monday, 11am-5pm. If we’re supposed to be closed, but it looks like we’re there, try the door. If it’s open, the shop’s open!

Love & Light,

Hi, folks!

High wind warning today. Snow down to 500 or 1000 feet depending on where you are?

It’s dim and grey outside and the porch roof drips occasionally. I don’t know that we actually had frost last night, but it was certainly cold enough….already down to 34F when we got home.

Yesterday morning I spent a little while in the garden before heading to the shop. I harvested some calendula, chickweed, dandelions and ate quite a bit of the garden sorrel which is starting to really come back after the winter. I made a list of things that need to get worked on, trying to figure out how long they’re going to take. Of course, the camera got pulled out and I want to get those pix developed today. I even managed a small amount of weeding under where the greenhouse tent normally is. I need to get some more seeds in since we’ve eaten most of the greens, except for the sorrel and dandelion, and the radishes are at the plumping up stage. Maybe I need to get out there with my dibble this morning?

Yesterday was frustrating because we spent the whole day doing small stuff that had to be done “right now” and didn’t get done the stuff that we had planned. That drives me stark raving up a tree! Tempus had some bills to pay and other errands to do and then the day was gone. I did get the magazine display re-done and all of them counted, made some jewelry pieces and worked on the love bells. I sorted the contents of a few more boxes and got a little farther down the road on which herbs I need to prep & pack next. I even went through a lot of paper, getting stuff into the recycling or filed, but we *still* need to inventory the crystal wall!

Class went well last night, but we were missing two students. The one that made it last night is starting a new job, so I told her to take next week off and maybe I can get the other two caught up.

The wind took the greenhouse tent down several days ago, just collapsed it, and we had pulled it off onto the grass, but with the temperature last night I asked Tempus to put it back over the space where it normally lives. I don’t want to lose the rest of the greens and the calendula! I just had him lay it gently on top, flat. This morning he went out and got it set aside where the winds later won’t walk off with it.

I’m smelling pancakes. I’ve had my juice and I’m working on coffee and watching as the wind is starting to pick up.

… eggs scrambled with a little bacon and pancakes and coffee. Yummy!

Ok, now that we’ve had breakfast…. Tempus is making phone calls….

Today is the day that the Rural Tourism Studio sessions begin. Tonight is the “Community Tourism Visioning” session at Rumi’s at 4pm and tomorrow, all day, is the planning workshop. That’s going to eat the entirety of my weekend, but I’m pretty excited about the possibilities.

I’m going to try to sort out the problem with the Yahoo group getting spam. What I’m trying to do right now it to figure out which account is generating it. It’s not me. That much I figured out last week, but Yahoo hasn’t gotten back to me and I need their help. Hopefully, with a little time to be on the phone, that will sort out.

Ok, Movie Night and Psychic Fair and Vedic Astrology etc.!  This coming weekend is our monthly psychic fair. It runs from Friday afternoon to Sunday evening. I will be available for readings on Friday, and we have several guest readers coming in over the weekend. Our special guest will be Michael Reed who is both a Vedic and traditional Western Astrologer. He does readings as well, but delivers them over the Internet.

Here’s his bit about the talk he’s doing:
“Hello Friends! I will be holding a one hour lecture/workshop Astrology is Life - The Language of the Universe on the 3rd of March at 2 pm at Ancient Light. Through this workshop, you can learn how to relate to Astrology in your daily life and understand how it truly is the Language of the Universe. Hope to see you there! If you would like to learn more about my approach to astrology, please feel free to visit our website, www.authenticastrology.com or my Facebook Page for Authentic Man Astrology, http://www.facebook.com/pages/Authentic-Man-Astrol ogy/185596578159120”

You can find out a lot about who/how/what at his website.

Other things that will be going on are the usual weekend class/workshops: Herbs at 11am on Saturday, Sewing at 3pm Saturday, Wicca 101 at 10 am on Sunday and Practical Craft at 3pm on Sunday. I’m hoping Brea will come in to do her next Elements class at 1pm on Sunday, but I haven’t spoken to her yet this week.

Other “specials” for this fair happen starting at 6pm on Saturday with a Meditation. This time it will be a Metta meditation based on a prayer of Gandhi’s, led by Anja. Further training in meditation is also available. At 7pm will be a free showing of The Secret. Bring snacks if you’d like and we have hot drinkables available. The movie will be followed by a free-form discussion of the concepts in the movie.

We’re planning to continue these “Movie Night” showings at the monthly psychic fairs through the rest of the year.

The shop is closed Tuesday/Wednesday. Winter hours – Thursday through Monday, 11am-5pm. If we’re supposed to be closed, but it looks like we’re there, try the door. If it’s open, the shop’s open!

Love & Light,
Anja

See the six or seven brightest night objects at once. The last few days of February and first few days of March offer a rare chance for people at mid-northern latitudes to see at least a half dozen of the night sky's brightest objects simultaneously, 30 to 60 minutes after sunset. Daily Stuff 2-27-12 Fornicalia
Posted by: CoastalAnja, 06:43 PM GMT on Φεβρουάριος 27, 2012 +0
Hi, folks!

Hail Fornax! Happy Fornicalia! (no, that’s *not* what it sounds like, look for the explanation below!)

Wicca 101 at 6pm.

We’re under a high wind warning for tomorrow, and the rest of the area is probably going to see snow, at least in the mountains. Check www.wunderground.com The warnings are in links at the top of your local weather page.

Wow… sounds like “interesting” music. “highly explosive genre known as Russian turbo polka rock”. New group called “Russkaja”. (Btw, “roosk-AYE-uh”, not “roosk-AH-juh”…..) Polka rock? 

Can you tell I was more than a little punchy when I started this last night?

It’s been a long weekend. Saturday was just one long slog through sorting out the holiday area. We’re within about an hour of finishing. The rest is pulling out the boxes of holiday stock, since they just don’t fit, and putting into the right boxes things like a puzzle, Easter tree ornaments and a carrot-shaped candy holder, 4th July napkins, etc. No one showed for Herbs, so I put that stuff aside.

Tempus and I took turned helping customers and took a break for Sewing Workshop. I still haven’t decided what to do about the ritual robe. It turns out that the pattern that should have been big enough is not by about 4 inches around the chest. …and I don’t have a lot of chest to worry over! I hate to think how tight it would be farther down…. Rather than having to piece in extra fabric and having to re-think the embroidery pattern on the fly, I think the smart move is going to be to re-draw the pattern on the fabric *before* I go to embroider it, so it’s probably going to sit for a while. That’s ok. I’m making progress on the Holbein-work piece instead. I also want to get the embroidery cover made, so that I stop getting water rings on the fabric. I’m also going to have to make a sign that says something like, “No, this is not a table, it is a piece of fabric in a frame. If you set something here it will spill all over my embroidery and I will *not* be happy with you!” So far only the spilled coffee has stained and it wasn’t on a pattern piece, only the edge.

This was a “politics” weekend. Part of it was about pagan politics, mostly the gender issues that have gotten in the way of Pantheacon over the last two years. I needed to explain some of the issues to folks who had seen just comments, but didn’t know what was going on. (e-mail me if you need some of this….I have links….) and several of us sat and discussed bits. The rest of the political stuff was on Sunday and it was local/global/this-is-an-election-year stuff.

The Sunday morning class is working on Lesson 1. We’re part-way through, working our way through vocabulary and the “kick down the box” thoughtforms. Tempus made a mac/cheese/meatball lunch and we kicked around, talking with folks looking at some of the stock for a bit.

I scooted up to the house to make a batch of shortbread and got back just in time for the Waldport Progressives to start. In case you’re interested this is a *political* group, not religious. It is specifically working in the local area. You’ll probably see things in the newsletter about it, but I’m not going to talk here about the issues until and unless they impact our forms of worship any more than I’m going to preach at you about the Rural Tourism studio stuff that’s going on. I’m mentioning…. If you’re interested, ask. …and there’s still space in the Rural Tourism Studio stuff! http://industry.traveloregon.com/Departments/Touri sm-Development/Oregon-Rural-Tourism-Studio-1.aspx

One of the Job Corps folks is very musical, likes playing all kinds of instruments, so when I was up at the house, I pulled out my bass and tenor recorders and brought them down to the shop. She apparently played from then until Tempus took the bunch of them back to the Center.  …and when the Progressives left, the folks that were still at the shop talked politics until an hour past closing time.

Tempus and I were pretty tired, but we kept going until 7, finishing up the day’s tasks, then came home and watched the last of the “6 Wives of Henry VII” while eating supper, then answered mail and went to bed.

I’ve been watching the morning and birds while I’m trying to comb my hair out. There was frost last night and it dripped from the underside of the porch roof as everything started to melt. The clematis has gone berserk with its blooming, and the birds are eating the feeder down to nubs. Hummingbirds have managed to get about ½ of what we in their feeder, finally. Tempus and I saw a flicker (woodpecker) in the garden a couple of days ago and I harvested a good handful of radishes again.

Today Tempus and I have to finish the holiday section and then inventory crystals.

Tomorrow I’ll go into “Movie Night”!

The shop opens at 11am and we’ll be there through class time. Winter hours – Thursday through Monday, 11am-5pm. If we’re supposed to be closed, but it looks like we’re there, try the door. If it’s open, the shop’s open!

Love & Light,
Anja

Quoting from Pip Wilson’s Almanac (with permission) www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fornax Festival of bread, ovens, and the oven goddess, who showed humans how to bake bread. In Roman mythology, Fornax is the goddess of furnaces, whence their name. Observance of the day helped plants in the coming growing season. Plants should be tended today with special loving care.
The festivity was held over several days this month (this being the last day; I am uncertain which was the first) in the Forum by the curiae (ancient unions of kinsmen). The time for its celebration was proclaimed each year by the Curio Maximus, who placed in the Forum tablets that announced the different part which each curia had to take in the celebration of the festival.
Also:
Fornax - From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fornax
This article is about a constellation of stars. For the Roman goddess, see Fornax (mythology).
Fornax ( /ˈfɔrnæks/) is a constellation in the southern sky. Its name is Latin for furnace. It was created in the 18th century and is now one of the 88 modern constellations.
History
Fornax was formed by Nicolas Louis de Lacaille in 1756. He originally called it Fornax Chemica ("chemical furnace"), representing a small solid fuel heater used for heating chemical experiments.
Notable features
Fornax has been the target of investigations into the furthest reaches of the universe. The Hubble Ultra Deep Field is located within Fornax, and the Fornax Cluster, a small cluster of galaxies, lies primarily within Fornax. At a meeting of the Royal Astronomical Society in Britain, a team from University of Queensland described 40 unknown "dwarf" galaxies in this constellation; follow-up observations with the Hubble Space Telescope and the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope revealed that ultra compact dwarfs are much smaller than previously known dwarf galaxies, about 120 light-years (37 pc) across (Hilker M. et. al., 2007).
NGC 1316 is a notably bright elliptical galaxy within the Fornax Cluster. The galaxy is also one of the brightest radio sources in the sky.
UDFj-39546284, a galaxy which was identified as the most distant object in the universe from Earth as of January 2011, is located in Fornax. It was detected using the Hubble UDF image.
HIP 13044 b is an exoplanet in the constellation, reported in November 2010, that was discovered to have originated outside of the galaxy.[1]

Hi, folks!

Wicca 101 at 10am. Waldport Progressives at 2pm.

…and I’m running massively late this morning. I badly overslept!

Wicca 101 is the usual young adult, Job Corps group. Waldport Progressives is a political meeting that grew out of the showing of Inside Job a couple of weeks back.

I gotta run up to the shop. I’ll try to tag a note in about yesterday if I get a chance.

The shop opens at 11am. Winter hours – Thursday through Monday, 11am-5pm. If we’re supposed to be closed, but it looks like we’re there, try the door. If it’s open, the shop’s open!

Hi, folks!

Herbs Workshop at 11am. Sewing workshop at 3pm.

It was *really* windy during the night! When we left the shop last night around 9pm Tempus and I were commiserating about how the wind seemed to have teeth. It’s was 49F, but you would have thought it was in the 30’s the way the wind searched out uncovered skin and chilled it. Both of us had aching hands by the time we got into the house.

During the first hour after we got home, we were finally eating supper when the first wind sounds started up and we couldn’t figure out why there was someone at the front door, knocking and pot lids falling over in the kitchen at the same time! It wasn’t what it sounded like. The “knocking” was that doors were starting to bang and the “pot lids” were the metal mini-blinds making crashing sounds as they dropped back into place, having belled inward from wind pressure! By midnight the power had flickered several times, re-starting the computers and the wireless router, which gave Tempus fits trying to get everything up and going again. My computer just crashes and re-starts….and I don’t think I lost anything because I was already in bed. At one point just as I was dozing off there was a howl from the wind, the blinds flew away from the window and I got sprayed with rain! ….from a window that was open about 2 inches…. It wasn’t enough to get me more than damp, but that was a shock, to put it mildly. …and I was awake for another ½ hour trying to peel myself off of the ceiling….

It’s fairly bright outside and breezy, gusts going into the low 20’s. It’s not raining now, but it was even an hour ago. …nope, that’s rain again….and dry again, although the roof edge is dripping….and some more rain…..

Most of the day, yesterday, was spent working on one project after another, getting each a little farther down the road. I finally got the newest cedar smudges up on the wall. I worked on the beading area and made another pair of earrings. I started to set up another load for the rock tumblers, but it’s all in bags. I found a couple of bags of herbs to use for the workshops today, things that aren’t on the wall, yet, (poppy flowers for one). I pulled out several sets of hardware and got those into the sorters and asked Tempus about some more that I can see, but not reach.

I’m still sorting stuff in the back, trying to get things into some kind of order among all the fabrics, mostly. I hung up a batch of things that had been pulled off of the utility room door and laid on the sofa and then buried and then pulled out the sofa pillows that need to be mended and set them on the machine where I can find them again. I found another stash of bias tape that I was sure I hadn’t used, but had vanished! That means a couple of red-bordered altar cloths are going to the top of the sewing list and maybe a couple of the oddball colors.

I’ve gotten the sofa mostly clear, which will be nice when we have movie times. I’m seriously thinking about doing a fund-raiser for Cherry Hill Seminary, which will be a showing of the Agora, but I need to run that past the Circle. The 103 class is planning on watching the Craft through to see what we can come up with correspondences and we’ve been talking about running a few for the Job Corps group. Well, we’ll see.

Tempus mostly worked on business stuff. We’re *still* trying to get all the business accounts transferred to West Coast Bank and he worked on those things, plus trying to get bills into order. We got surprised on the power bills this month because we had lost track of what the due date is.

We ended up staying way later into the evening than we had planned, because someone came in with a problem and Tempus was actually doing most of the counseling while I kept working.

Tempus was looking at the hummingbird feeder just now and wondering what’s different. The birds have been polishing off the smaller amounts that he’s been putting in their feeder to the point where he couldn’t keep up, so he put double in this time, and we haven’t seen the level drop in 3 days!

Here come the crows…. I’d better get this done and out, so we can get to the shop. I need to pick up some of the stuff on the work table before Herbs!

…and sun again. Go figure!

The shop opens at 11am. Winter hours – Thursday through Monday, 11am-5pm. If we’re supposed to be closed, but it looks like we’re there, try the door. If it’s open, the shop’s open!

Love & Light,
Anja

The Moon is at Diana’s Bow which lasts until 2:35am on Sunday. New Moon Magicks - The beginning of a new cycle. - Keywords for the New phase are: beginning, birth, emergence, projection, clarity. It is the time in a cycle that you are stimulated to take a new action. During this phase the new cycle is being seeded by your vision, inner and outer. Engage in physical activity. Spend time alone. VISUALIZE your goals for the 29.6-day cycle ahead. The new moon is for starting new ventures, new beginnings. Also love and romance, health or job hunting. Diana’s Bow – On the 3rd day after the new moon you can (weather permitting) see the tiny crescent in the sky, the New Moon holding the Old Moon in her arms. Begin on your goals for the next month. A good time for job interviews or starting a project. Take a concrete step! Waxing Crescent phase - Keywords for the Crescent phase are: expansion, growth, struggle, opportunity. It is the time in a cycle that you gather the wisdom learned in the new phase and communicate your intention to move forward. Light a candle. Write or read an affirmation. LISTEN & ABSORB. Commit to your goal.

The crescent Moon pairs spectacularly with Venus during and after twilight! They're just 3° apart at the time of twilight for eastern North America, 4° apart during twilight in the West. Jupiter looks down on them from 14° to Venus's upper left.
This Moon-Venus pairing offers a fine chance to spot Venus earlier during the day. Have you ever seen Venus in a daytime blue sky? Use our guide to see precisely where to look in late afternoon. You may be surprised at how easily Venus pops out!
Comet Garradd, still 6th or 7th magnitude, is crossing the back of Draco, high in the sky late at night and in the early morning hours. See the article and chart in the March Sky & Telescope, page 60, or online.

Hi, folks!

I’m up early and it’s already getting light. The days are changing by 3 minutes per. The Wheel is Turning! When I looked out the study window something about the growing light on the eastern horizon made me think that Dawn was pushing back dark bed covers.

It’s cold, down in the upper 30’s because right now it’s completely clear. Last night at the break in class, Tempus called me outside. “You have to come see this!” Against the deep blue of the last twilight the thinnest sliver of white decorated the bottom of the moon’s disc. Above it, Venus was brilliant, almost at the full, and Jupiter, which has reigned supreme over the night sky for months, was almost dull…..

The sunlight crept its way down the cedars and finally the alder and now it’s lighted up the file cabinet in the study.

There was a whole murder of crows out there for a bit this morning, all flapping and jumping on the railings. Right now it’s all jays, and they are making an horrible racket. Getting up to look at the sunrise (almost all the way to the north through the clump of trees!) I startled a bunch of sparrows and they zipped away into the rugosa.

Yesterday was taken up with catching up on detail work. I was checking back on orders that go out by mail, checking in some new stock and sending website updates to the webmaster. Tempus had to run around a bit, since we forgot some things at the house and some bills needed to get paid.

We got the new salt lamps! Those of you that were waiting should come in and get them. One style plugs into the USB port on your computer. That’s perfect for counter-acting the “bad” ions that electronic equipment gives off. Another is a lighted bowl of salt chunks intended for a larger room. Of course we still have the candle lamps, too. We’re stocked back up on chime ball pairs and I got two pair of stone balls for meditation and exercise, plus a couple more of the Quan Yin hangers.

Class last night went well, although we didn’t get through as much as I had planned of it. It was for an awesome reason, though. Lupa showed up! She and her partner have been taking it easy on the way back from Pantheacon, a bit of a vacation. We had already started class when they got there and she wasn’t going to interrupt, but I asked her to come in and tell everyone about the controversy at the event this year, since it has come up and Lupa was actually there. I wanted to hear it, myself. We talked for a bit and then they went to get some supper and we finished class.

By the time we were done, they were back and we got to talk. They’re working on schedules, but it looks like she’ll definitely make it for Pan-Pagan and we’re going to try to set up a “Lupa weekend”, if we can this summer, at one of the psychic fairs!

Also, we have tails! Lupa is one of the few people that I trust to get these materials ethically. She works with them, shamanicly blessing/cleansing them. The tails are lovely and soft, and for the furry-inclined they have a clip to attach to a belt loop so that you can have the tail that it feels like is missing.

I do understand that some people have problems with fur. I have problems with it, myself, if animals are hunted and killed for ornament, or worse, factory-farmed only for their skins. That just seems so very sad and wrong, but to ignore that this happens and to simply discard the “leftovers” is worse. These pieces are discarded by the industry, so for this use they are reclaimed, rather than being allowed to go to a landfill, and we honor their spirits. Part of the proceeds go to making the lives of those that are still living better. Lupa has a page of links about this kind of magick here: http://lupagreenwolf.deviantart.com/journal/The-Sp irits-in-the-Skins-Lotsa-Links-For-You-271772454 and a bit about tails, specifically, here: http://www.witchvox.com/va/dt_va.html?a=&c=words&i d=14618

The shop opens at 11am. Winter hours – Thursday through Monday, 11am-5pm. If we’re supposed to be closed, but it looks like we’re there, try the door. If it’s open, the shop’s open!

Love & Light,

Hi, folks!

The sun is shining so brightly that it’s hard to look outside the window. There’s a sparrow throwing seed bits from the feeder tray. It’s chilly out there, low 40’s, very light breeze. The sky is such a pretty soft blue. Thicker bits of cloud dim the brilliance, occasionally, but not for long.

Tempus cleaned the fridge yesterday and has put some leftovers out for the birds. The waffle pieces went first and there’s a lot of rice out that crows have been squabbling over. At one point two crows were standing in the rice tray kerfluffling at each other. There were two little birds watching them that seems to be saying, “You two are nuts! Just *eat*, already!” The crows flew off, still pecking and the little birds are stuffing themselves.

I ended up writing all day yesterday…or trying to. I started the day sending out articles and book blurbs to various people… one of these days something will sell again… and then settled in to work on “Coastal Sketches”, which is a journal concept that I’ve had for a long while. …it’s not going well.

It was too wet to really do much outside yesterday and Tempus was working on his tax prep class. We both did bits of other chores, but minimums, not what I figured was going to be happening.

Supper was some of the chicken dish over lettuce with cheese.

Esbat ended up being the LBRP.

Crows are squabbling again. One of them started by sidling up to the tray with the rice. He grabbed a stuck-together mass and flew off. The next one landed at a distance, snuck up on it, grabbed and flew away. The third one looked it all over and kept back and forthing, then made a quick grab and it exploded in his face. He fell over the railing with a squawk. They’re acting like the rice is alive and going to grab for them!

The shop opens at 11am and we’ll be there through class time tonight, although 103 is usually finished by 7:30 or so. . Winter hours – Thursday through Monday, 11am-5pm. If we’re supposed to be closed, but it looks like we’re there, try the door. If it’s open, the shop’s open!

Hi, folks!

It’s dim and wet outside and a little windy, enough so that the branches are moving constantly, but not enough to make them thrash. The porch roof is dripping steadily.

…and I’ve been sitting here, staring out the window for over an hour! I gotta get back to this….

It’s almost 50F. I’ve been watching birds on the feeders. I’ve got a plant stand right under the porch window that I dumped a bunch of old popcorn into last night and the towhees are just crazy for it. I wish it were light enough to use the camera.

The rain is heavy enough that even the cedars on the other side of the back yard are greying out. That makes the greens very rich and the reddish catkins and buds on the alder stand out against the grey trunks that are green-silvered with lichens and witch moss. I’m hoping that are some point today it will actually get bright enough to get a pick of the trailing, blooming clematis at the end of the porch. It’s a gorgeous contrast to alder and cedar behind it!

Yesterday was a paperwork day. I spent the whole day working on e-mails, papers, files and spreadsheets, only taking time out to make a couple of chicken dishes that we can eat all this week. I filled a trashcan with paper to recycle and another with trash and emptied an ½ dozen boxes. I just wish my study *looked* like I did!

The chicken was an easy one. I took a bag of frozen chicken, dumped it into a covered casserole with dill, salt and about an inch of water, then stuck it in the oven for 3 hours until it was up to temperature. I added bamboo shoots, canned baby corn and peas and boiled up a bag of shell rice pasta, then made a brown mushroom/onion gravy. There was only enough of that for about ½ the chicken mix, so the rest is put by for use on top of a salad. There was a cup and a half of broth left over that’s going into the soup starter box once it’s de-greased.

A number of times during the day I stopped to stare out the window for a few minutes, mostly to rest my eyes, but also to marvel at the loveliness of the day. Yes, sunshine is beautiful, but this is the weather that made me move out here.

Tempus is working on his tax prep class. He’s finally 2/3 of the way through it.

The rain is supposed to let up some in the middle of the day. When it does we’re planning to get out into the garden, but around that I’m going on with working in the study. I brought in another of the ornament boxes that I was working on last month. I also have a stack of books to get filed and with any luck I’ll whittle out another bit of the pile in the corner. I want to get the box off of the other chair that I haven’t been able to use since last fall because the box just keeps getting stacked higher and higher! First, though, I need to go through the inventory file to see just what’s left to do.

Tempus is still figuring on working on his tax class as well as doing more of the house chores. I’d like to get us both outside for a bit, rain or not to pick up and sweep off the porch, maybe get some of the stuff that’s broken and/or useless into the trash or compost, as well…..

We have esbat tonight up at the house. We’re experimenting with having the “work” esbats on Wednesday evenings, but keeping the Sabbats on Friday evenings. If the rain lets up and stays that way we’ll be doing a Brigdhe’s Flame. If not, we’ll be working on the LBRP.

The shop is closed today. If you need something, you can get ahold of me here. Winter hours – Thursday through Monday, 11am-5pm. If we’re supposed to be closed, but it looks like we’re there, try the door. If it’s open, the shop’s open!

Anja

Hi, folks!

Before it started to get light this morning I got a glimpse of bare twigs on a shrub by the house next door, bare branches glistening wetly in the security light’s gleam.

It’s wet and windy and supposed to be for a couple of days, still, probably not really clearing up until after this coming weekend. Most likely that puts paid to Herbs Outdoors this week, although Tempus and I are going to have to put some time in on the pathway, at least, and I need to get some more stuff into the ground. Over the last few days I’ve been harvesting calendula, taking the petals off and leaving them to dry separately (and more quickly) from the centers.

...

Yesterday was another “just work” day. You’ve heard too much about details over the last several weeks, so since it’s past 1pm (!?!?!?!!!!!!) I’m going to just cut this off, here.

Have you ever seen Canopus, the second-brightest star after Sirius? In one of the many interesting coincidences that devoted skywatchers know about, Canopus lies almost due south of Sirius: by 36°. That's far enough south that it never appears above your horizon unless you live below latitude 37° N (southern Virginia, southern Missouri, central California). And even there you'll need a flat south horizon. Canopus transits the sky's north-south meridian just 21 minutes before Sirius does.
When to look? Canopus transits right when Beta Canis Majoris (Mirzim) does. That's the fairly bright star about three finger-widths to Sirius's right. When Mirzim is due south, look straight down from there.

Hi, folks!

Wicca 101 at 6pm.

Everything is dripping. Water droplets cling to every point on every branch and catkin. The feeder is almost empty. We need to get more seed today.

We’ve had breakfast and I’ve been reading some interesting articles about Stonehenge, a “Lava Waterfall” at Yosemite, and postings about Pantheacon.

We got the cloth onto the little coffee/altar table in the reading area of the shop early in the day, yesterday. I was cleaning/sorting in the classroom and then Tempus settled in to do the same. He moved the shelf unit that the DVD’s are going into to the far end of the class table and re-set the last of the stuff from the front. Today the box of DVD’s needs to head in the direction of those shelves.

At just about the point where that all got finished I took a hard look at the calendar and realized that I got the date totally wrong for the political group meeting. I’m still not sure how it ended up in the calendar that way. It’s *next* Sunday that the meeting is happening. Diana is sending out an e-mail to those who signed up. I did some checking before I re-shared the newsletter on Facebook, so that had the right info. …and I’ll get a flyer up when I get all the info from Diana.

No one from Job Corps got there. Not sure why…. So, Tempus and I worked on finding things that exist in the inventory, but aren’t where they were supposed to be. I also pulled those lines off to another file, so that they’re more easily seen. We also got the rock tumblers emptied and the stones sorted. I’ve got a lot of work to do with those. About ½ of each tumbler are “done”.

Tempus took off around 12:30 for the “Sundays in Spirit” seminar. He found it interesting and made some contacts in the group for later.

I settled in to just mend/find/create steadily while he was gone. I ended up with several new earrings, a couple of bracelets, several necklaces or pendants, headers for cedar smudges, headers for some of the new stones, and for other things in the basket (a couple of sachets and a necklace).

I’m fairly proud of the one bracelet. I think it’s going to make someone very happy. I had a butterfly pentacle left and that went onto a bracelet that had been very pretty before it got damaged. I re-strung the bracelet and added the pentacle, so there’s a very feminine white/pink bracelet with a couple of lavender touches, sitting right next to the deep blue one with a peace sign.

Once the stones were dry I went through and sorted them. The ones that were polished enough for sale (black agates, sunstones, a nice red jasper and a unakite) got bagged and inventoried and I was starting to print headers when Tempus got back.

After he got back to the shop we sat and talked about the seminar for a while, then he helped me with moving some things that I shouldn’t shift. After that I handed him some things that needed to be put away in the hardware and some other things that needed to be sorted from miscellaneous craft supplies, while I deal with the craft supplies/projects themselves. …and then we finally went home, had supper, watched another of Henry VIII’s six wives (Anne of Cleves) and then crashed. …well, I did. Tempus made a loaf of bread and came to bed way late.

Today…is more of the same… nothing big is on the schedule to do, other than class tonight.

The shop opens at 11 today. Winter hours – Thursday through Monday, 11am-5pm. If we’re supposed to be closed, but it looks like we’re there, try the door. If it’s open, the shop’s open!

Love & Light,

When to look? Canopus transits right when Beta Canis Majoris (Mirzim) does. That's the fairly bright star about three finger-widths to Sirius's right. When Mirzim is due south, look straight down from there.

Hi, folks!

Wicca 101 at 10am. 1pm “Spirit & Timelessness” (see below). 2pm “Waldport Lefties” (political)

Sun suddenly poured over the eastern horizon. I noticed because of a flying Stellar Jay that caught my eye as he flashed a brilliant sapphire blue. It’s about 38F and almost no wind. The computer says it’s overcast, but no one told the sun that!

I keep yawning, but Tempus just made coffee. He woke me last night after I had gone to sleep, lights out and everything, with the smell of new bread. Oh, it was delicious! It was worth getting up to grab a slice off the end of the new, perfect loaf. People have raved about the scent of new bread for almost as long as people have been writing. The taste you don’t hear about as much and his bread is wonderful, far better than I’ve ever made.

We got a lot done, yesterday, but we were both dragging-tired by the end of it. No one was there for Herbs, so I worked on cleaning up some equipment. Between then and Sewing I worked on checking in some new stock, and some “found” things, and did quite a bit of mending on jewelry pieces that I’ve been saving to fix.

I also sorted quite a lot of office supplies into their right places. That will save us having a buy quite a lot. It looks like those all got stashed right after Faerieworlds in 2010. There was a layer of paper keepsakes on top that I only just got filed. One more empty box!

I caught a short nap mid-day and when I woke, Marius was there. He and Tempus got the small table that’s been up front in the reading area cleaned off and cleaned out and even Cleansed. We’re intending to put that piece back to use as an esbat altar, having it hold the Circle’s ritual tools. By the time we left last night it was dry and back in place. I think I still have to get a cloth on it….

Sewing was just two of us, but several more were in just to chat. I finished the back shoulder design of the robe (pictures soon!) and moved the fabric. I’m thinking to pull the whole piece off the frame and check a couple of measurements before I start the next section of embroidery. That might give me a chance to decide which part I want to work on, (better to see the overall effect!), and also to prevent having to piece in extra *after* I get the embroidery done. I *really* don’t want to have to go back and re-do later!

The Job Corps Group has their usual Wicca 101 at 10am. After they have their lunch, Tempus (and Marius, if he can get here) are going to take them over to Soul Vacation Resort in Bayshore for a 1pm-3:30 seminar on “Spirit & Timelessness”. This is part of a series that Dr. Ruth (last name is escaping me….) calls Sundays in Spirit. The event actually begins at 10am. There are details and directions at the shop. I was forgetting until today that at 2pm the “Waldport Lefties” (political) are supposed to be meeting at the shop. The agenda is to get some ideas down on paper.

The shop opens at 11 today, although we’ll be there not long after 9am. Winter hours – Thursday through Monday, 11am-5pm. If we’re supposed to be closed, but it looks like we’re there, try the door. If it’s open, the shop’s open!

Anja

Hi, folks!

Herbs Workshop at 11am and Sewing Workshop at 3pm.

It’s only 6:30 and it’s already light enough to see. I’m not sure if it’s actually windy, although it looks like things are waving around.

Almost 8am – I’ve been trying to sort out the computer. It’s really having issues this morning, but re-starting fixed it, as far as I can tell.

I’ve been doing a little research on Gobekli Tepe, a 10-12K years old “temple complex” in Turkey.

Tempus ended up on the phone just as I was getting the newsletter out. The bank person didn’t come in, but had found out some information that she didn’t have, either, and by dint of Tempus spending a large portion of the day on the phone with this person and that, we may have finally gotten the credit card receipt heading where they were supposed to go! …Upshot is that as soon as we see they’re going to the new bank, we can shut down the old accounts…and the double charges on taking cards should get refunded by the end of March.

We did get stuff done, yesterday, but the crystals still aren’t counted. I’m going to have to try to work on that today, too. A lot of little things got put away, and I finally got a skirt made for the pottery table, so that looks better. I managed to count several more sets of things for the inventory, but Tempus was busy all day with the bank stuff, so the parts that take two didn’t happen. We were pretty busy with customers during the day.

Tempus burned an egg on the stove and the house smells horrible. We’re heading for the shop, now!

The shop opens at 11 today, although we’re trying to be a little early. Winter hours – Thursday through Monday, 11am-5pm. If we’re supposed to be closed, but it looks like we’re there, try the door. If it’s open, the shop’s open!

Love & Light,
Anja

Hi, folks!

It’s dim and grey outside, and nearly the forecast high of 52F. Branches are waving and leaves fluttering, and rain is sheeting across the yard. Well, the birds aren’t happy. They’re shoving and flapping at each other.

Wednesday’s garden time was just Tempus and me again. I started working on the window boxes, harvesting radishes and greens and planting more seeds. I did some picking up and then got my rolly stool, weeded somewhat around the base of the weigelia (that needs a *lot* more work) and started in on the edge of the pathway. When Tempus came out he started getting sand from the buckets that we’ve had for a while. I dug and pulled and dumped, walloping the pieces that were coming out to get the pebbles loose and gradually worked my way down the path to the driveway.

By that time, Tempus had finished emptying that one bucket of sand onto the part of the path that we worked on last time. Then he got a shovel, dug along the driveway to get the edge clean and then started working back along the curve of the path.

What we’re trying to do is get the grass out of the pathway and to discourage it from coming back. Even as hard-packed as the sand and gravel mix that I was digging in was packed, grass had rooted in it. We’re hoping that this rain today will wash the dirt back down in, so that the sand we’re putting on becomes the next layer as the gravel works its way to the top.

I turned and started on in the inside edge of the path, working my way up to the hydrangea, then around it, mostly pulling grass and sorrel, trying to get every bit, to give the succulents and bulbs around the base of the big plant a better chance to survive. After the effort of the pulling and digging *that* should have seemed a holiday, but by that time my hip sockets were screaming bloody murder. It would have been easier if they had disowned me and taken off to bed on their own! It was painstaking, fiddly work and I’m not all the way to the edge of the rose bed. I have more to do and we have more sand to put down, but that path is *way* better than it was.

I also showed Tempus, while nibbling dandelion leaves (yum!) the way to tell, close up, which were dandelions, which hawkweed and which were the other plants that we don’t want in the lawn. I’m going to have to go over that section relatively soon, with my weeding stick, but at least the pathway is almost done.

So, although I was tired, I was also saying, “OW!” off and on all of the night before last. Also being twitchy about the possibility of another large earthquake, because of all the little ones….well, I slept very badly, so yesterday morning I ran *way* late for getting the newsletter out.

I needed to be at the shop on time, since I had a counseling appointment set up. That ran until people started arriving for the Crone’s Tea, and *that* ran until the students were showing up for the Wicca 103 class! All of that went really well. Tempus ran errands late in the afternoon.

This morning we have one of the bank people coming in at 10am so we can get the last steps of transferring the shop bank accounts over to West Coast Bank from Bank of America. We’ll open at the regular time, although if someone comes in to browse before that, that’s fine.

We’ve got some sorting to do in the back, putting away some things into their “living space” on the shelves. We also have to see if we can get the crystals display finally counted. We’ll be there a little late tonight, closing when everyone gets there for Esbat.

The shop open at 11 today. Winter hours – Thursday through Monday, 11am-5pm. If we’re supposed to be closed, but it looks like we’re there, try the door. If it’s open, the shop’s open!

Love & Light,
Anja

Hi, folks!

Herbs Outdoors at 3pm.

My study is full of light from the brilliant sunshine outdoors. The clematis is in bloom so I’m looking at white flowers all over, even if most of them are still not quite open. It’s still below 40F, even with the sunshine.

It was really chilly last night, too. We went to the China Star for dinner. They’re back in business! They closed for a vacation and the owner of the building decided to remodel the front while they were gone. It looks great with painted trim and a bright yellow exterior. Their food is flavorful. Even the egg flower soup was fragrant with celery and coriander instead of bland, the way most places serve it.

I did “play” most of the day yesterday. I had some research I was doing on old-style tickets, but that’s about it. I read a bit. Took a long bubble bath, played one of the few video games that I ever use and that sort of thing. Today is right back to work!

We didn’t get down into the park because, while it was nice when I was writing, I went into the bedroom to put some outdoor clothes on and it started to rain. But I had a fun day!

Tempus is working in the kitchen right now and I have to clean in the living dining room. We’re going to have company over the next few days. I have to get something made for the Crone’s Tea tomorrow, too.

Since Tempus re-filled the bird feeders they’ve been covered with birds. Yesterday there was one pair that both grabbed the same sunflower seed and had a tug-of-war over it. Today there have been several pairs of hummingbirds swirling around each other in the air. They must be courting. Right now there’s a junco that’s as twitchy as a chickadee. I wonder why he’s so upset… Oh! The Stellar Jays are back and the juncos and sparrows took off.

The shop is closed today. Winter hours – Thursday through Monday, 11am-5pm. If we’re supposed to be closed, but it looks like we’re there, try the door. If it’s open, the shop’s open!

Love & Light,
Anja

Brilliant Sirius shines highest due south around 9 p.m., depending on how far east or west you live in your time zone.
Have you ever seen Canopus, the second-brightest star after Sirius? In one of the many interesting coincidences that devoted skywatchers know about, Canopus lies almost due south of Sirius: by 36°. That's far enough south that it never appears above your horizon unless you live south of latitude 37° N (southern Virginia, southern Missouri, central California). And even there you'll need a flat south horizon. Canopus transits the sky's north-south meridian just 21 minutes before Sirius does.
When to look? Canopus transits when Beta Canis Majoris (Mirzim) does. That's the fairly bright star about three finger-widths at arm's length to the right of Sirius. Look straight down from there.

Hi, folks!

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Even though I can barely see them, yet, since it’s that dark, there are birds on the feeder. I think that’s a sparrow by the shape, but it’s still dark enough to not be sure. I *can* tell that I need to remind Tempus to fill the feeders today! The eaves are dripping and it’s been a little windy at times. I can’t see the thermometer.

I’ve been answering birthday wishes and talking to a couple of my sons this morning, but I think I’m going to go snuggle back up to my Valentine for a while.

That was nice! The sun is trying to peek through the clouds, but not succeeding well.

…and 2 ½ hours later. The phone’s been ringing, with birthday wishes. …and a lot of people are saying the same on Facebook. Thank you!

The sun’s been dipping in and out of the clouds. It’s warmed up some, at least 10 degrees since I first looked at the temp around 9:15.

…Wow! We just had an immature Cooper’s Hawk land on the railing. He stood there for a bit, looking around and kinking his neck into some of the funniest positions. Ever seen a hawk look at something from upside down? That was a hoot. He went from there onto the north steps railing and then to the compost heap, then down to the back porch steps then up and over and gone toward the south. Wow!!!

Yesterday went really well despite not doing what we were supposed to! We had a ton of “move this here”/”put this away” jobs that really took up most of the day. I re-set the classroom and I’m going to mark the floor as to where the table fits best, I think. I got the skirt on the AV cart, finally, so that looks a lot better and Tempus got the pieces so that we can use the other DVD player to feed. He also got a lot of the extraneous bits off of the cart, so that we can put the small boombox on it for people to play meditation CD’s from. Now I just have to track down the headphones….

We’re gradually finding more things and emptying boxes, but we’ve done the easy stuff, so it takes longer. I’m still trying to figure out where to put up a display of pins, since we have so many cool ones that there’s no room for in the display cases and I just found a dozen more that have been waiting for a display spot.

I also finally found the Love Spell Bells, so I’m going to get cards for how to work the spell made and get them strung properly, since right now they’re on light monofilament. That’s why I haven’t had them out for sale for years. We broke more than we sold, when the monofilament gave way! I’m going to re-string on wire and give them bead clappers.

Tempus made us a lovely waffle and omelet breakfast and put strawberry syrup in my coffee this morning as a Happy Birthday/Happy Valentine’s.

We’re planning to go out to dinner this evening, but haven’t decided where. I’m going to take some time to play today, although it may be playing out in the park if the weather holds. I’ll take my camera, Tempus, a collecting basket and a trowel. I want some plants for the terrarium in the bathroom at the shop! Chores are *tomorrow*!

The shop is closed today and tomorrow. Winter hours – Thursday through Monday, 11am-5pm. If we’re supposed to be closed, but it looks like we’re there, try the door. If it’s open, the shop’s open!

Love & Light,
Anja

Venus, blazing in the southwest, is certainly the patron planet of Valentine's Day. As the stars come out, look to Venus's right by about two fist-widths at arm's length for the Great Square of Pegasus, which is standing on one corner. Hi, folks!

Wicca 101 at 6pm.

The catkins on the alder all have tiny droplets of water. The porch roof is dripping, slowly, in the growing light.

There’s a junco on the feeder, just looking at the morning.

I’m sorry that I really couldn’t write yesterday morning. I was so tired, still, that it took me longer to wake up enough the write that it was past time to leave for the shop! …and that was after 10 hours of sleep.

After a bunch of kerfluffles with printing and communications Saturday morning, I finally got on the road at about 9:15. Driving down the coast Saturday morning was just wonderful. When I started out there was only a little fog, but none at all at ground level. There was still quite a lot wisping up from the trees, but as I got farther south it clumped together more, finally making picture-pretty groupings of trees and clouds. Right around Cape Perpetua there was a bald eagle sitting in one of the trees.

Not long after that I had to stomp hard on the brakes because a deer that had started by jumping into the middle of the highway and then staying there for a moment, went on to trying to jump back across the left lane, then, seeing a car coming, he jumped back abruptly into *my* lane coming right at me! Luckily he aimed for the bank as I swerved left, but the brake light kept coming on for the rest of the drive. I’ve got to get Tempus to look at them.

During the abrupt maneuvers the basket with the various foodstuff dumped itself, flinging the mead bottle against the right-hand passenger door, so I had to stop and pick up the pieces of the bottle and then drive with the windows open because of the reek of the spilled mead. It’s a nice smell, thankfully. ..and yes, the deer had vanished up the bank. He took no hurt.

I watched quite a lot of other animals and birds along the highway, from sparrows on a wire to what might have been a moose peeking through the trees, to a flock of pelicans roller-coastering over the waves. On the mirror-smooth surface of Sutton Lake there were a lot of ducks and something swimming just at the waterline, making a v. Snake? Otter? I don’t know.

There was quite a lot of blooming broom on the side of the highway by the lookout above the long straight beach, as I was getting close to Florence. I sneezed all the way into town. I was startled to see rhododendrons blooming all over Florence. There were a lot of other early spring signs, but those were the most surprising. I haven’t seen any elsewhere blooming.

I stopped at a fast food place to use the bathroom and pick up a to-go snack and then got right back on the road. The rest of the drive was not nearly so interesting, especially once I got turned away from the Siuslaw in still-muddy Mapleton, but I did get to see a duck leaving their characteristic dot dash take-off signature in a lake on the way. It’s caused by the fact that they’re too heavy to get into flight without a lot of effort and take off at a shallow angle, with toes and wingtips alternately touching the water surface.

I waved hello to a horse in Walton and enjoyed all the ducks & geese in the last part of the drive, nearing Fern Ridge Reservoir. I pulled into the Grange parking lot and ran for the bathroom. Coffee! 

Fawkes, Rowan and Marius were all there, so they fished things out of the car and we got set up. Mary had an altar of memorabilia, including two lovely pictures of KC. I think there were around 50 people, possibly more, but we had some that were ducking in and out and I wasn’t really counting.

It was a long ritual, because of the stories that we all told. KC’s brother Keith’s story of his broken leg and the fun they had with a wheelchair was a hoot and there were others about KC’s kindness, his willingness to talk endlessly, his acceptance and interest in other paths, the dogs, his brilliance and depth of knowledge and his love for Mary. At the end of the ritual the baskets of flowers were full to overflowing.

We made sure people had signed the book and everyone got a bit to eat and sat/stood around and talked for quite a while. We got to meet some of the folks from Eugene that I’ve heard about and made some new friends, then picked up, packed up, swept, hugged and went home.

I was getting pretty tired by that time, so the drive back didn’t register as much as the stories from the ritual that kept rattling around in my head, and I finally wept myself out to the point of stillness that you hope for.

I met up with Rowan, Marius and Fawkes in Florence and we had supper at the A&W, since I had been longing for a root beer float, then finished the drive into Waldport. I did manage to get Fawkes his Yule gift and he did get a laugh out of it! They headed north and Tempus and I closed up the shop and came home.

Then I slept for 10 hours….

Then I got up and it took forever to wake up and then I was at the shop.

Mary and her close family were going to head for Gold Beach yesterday with the flowers. I haven’t yet heard how that went.

I had to clean up the classroom, first, and we were trying to get things re-set, but that got complicated by Willow needing a ride up and then the young folks were there. We had our morning class, which went quite well, then cleaned up and set up for the Movie Party. People started coming in at 12:30 and we had massive problems with the player, so finally we sat around and talked. Tempus went up to the house to get our player and then no one was interested in the rest of the movie! There’s going to be another meeting in two weeks and we’ll see where that goes.

I learned some things from the documentary and laid out in one place it’s even more damning than I thought. With all the deregulation there just wasn’t any stopping cutting the dollar into smaller and smaller pieces, so that eventually there wasn’t any money left. It had all been drained into private pockets and now that the whole thing has crashed in on itself, it’s no wonder that things are so sluggish. You can’t redistribute things like that and have no consequences, nor can you make something out of nothing and all the pretending will *not* create anything real!

We didn’t really get anywhere with classes later in the afternoon. Tempus took the young folks back to the center while Willow and I watched the movie through, and he came back in and saw the end. We closed up and helped Willow run some errands (her car is still down) then ran one of our own into the bank in Newport and back. I was in bed asleep at 10:30 and never even got online.

There’ve been lots of birds on the feeder and the sun is shining brightly. The alder has shaken all the little droplets off, except for a few that are twinkling.

Today’s work at the shop is to do the next batch of inventory stuff.

The shop opens at 11am today, but we’ll open early for the class. Winter hours – Thursday through Monday, 11am-5pm. If we’re supposed to be closed, but it looks like we’re there, try the door. If it’s open, the shop’s open!

Love & Light,
Anja

Hi, folks!

Wicca 101 at 10am. Movie Party at 1pm.

38F outside? My study is only just warming up enough after an hour to be comfortable and I’m still huddled up in a shawl. …and crawled back in with Tempus to warm up and fell back asleep. I’m warmed up better, now, though. …and that was falling asleep after crawling into bed at 8pm, sleeping until 6am. I guess I was pretty tired?  Now, at 8am the sun is shining. From the looks of things it’s only temporary, and the porch roof is dripping? I’m not sure what’s up with that.

The Movie Party starts at 1pm, although you can come in as early as noon and stay until 6pm for the discussions surrounding the documentary.

…and I’m still tired enough from yesterday, that all I want to say this morning is that it was a wonderful day and a great ritual… but exhausting. I’ll try to get some writing this evening, so you’ll hear about it all tomorrow or Tuesday.

The shop opens at 11am today, but we’ll open early for the class. Winter hours – Thursday through Monday, 11am-5pm. If we’re supposed to be closed, but it looks like we’re there, try the door. If it’s open, the shop’s open!

Hi, folks!

Celebration of Life for KC Anton, 1pm, Veneta Grange.

We might actually have some decent weather today. There’s still cloud on the eastern horizon, but there’s a band of pale sky above it. It’s pretty chilly, looks to be about 40F on the porch thermometer. The computer says 42….

There’s a Stellar Jar on the railing and chickadees and juncos are hopping on and off of the feeder. They look quite awake. Lots more so than I do!

We worked all day yesterday on dealing with the last huge branch of rosemary and didn’t finish. I can only do a bit at a time of the larger branches. We got it hacked up far enough to bundle up to dry, though.

I continued during a chunk of the day to work on getting “found” stock into the inventory, although I spent quite a lot of time actually answering e-mails and Facebook messages, partly about today, but also about the movie party on Sunday. Tempus picked the copy of the tape up from Chuck’s Video. Chuck’s donating the use of the DVD to the party!

Late in the afternoon we finally got going on packing the ritual gear and then finished up in the late evening. I still have to print the ritual pages, but I’m going to do that when I drop Tempus off at the shop, since that’s the better printer.

I didn’t have any takers on a ride to KC’s memorial service. I hope I didn’t miss something… That’s going to be today’s work. I might not have enough oomph to write about it until Monday, though.

Tempus will be at the shop. He volunteered to stay and keep the shop open, so he’s going to be doing paperwork, mostly.

I’ve had several people stop in about the Inside Job documentary. We’re going to be screening that on Sunday at 1pm. Tempus is going to make popcorn, but if you’d like you’re welcome to bring some other nibblements. This is about the causes of the crash on Wall Street and how to stop it happening again. You can sign up on MoveOn.org or just show up. There’s no charge, but we’ll have a donation can out for MoveOn.org.

…and the sun looks to be coming through the clouds. Have a great day!

The shop opens at 11am today, but Tempus going to be there early. Winter hours – Thursday through Monday, 11am-5pm. If we’re supposed to be closed, but it looks like we’re there, try the door. If it’s open, the shop’s open!

Algol in Perseus, the prototype eclipsing binary star, is at its minimum brightness (magnitude 3.4 instead of its usual 2.1) for a couple hours centered on 10:50 p.m. EST (7:50 p.m. PST).
By midnight tonight, the waning Moon is up in the southeast with Spica to its lower left and Saturn farther to the lower left. Mars blazes high to their upper right by then. Arcturus, tinted less deeply, shines to their upper left. To the right of the Moon is the constellation Corvus.
By the time dawn begins to brighten, Saturn, Spica, and the waning Moon passing them are high in the southwest. By dawn Sunday morning they've all moved over to the southwest and twisted around.

Hi, folks!

It’s raining cats and dogs and it’s blowing around 15mph and gusting up to 25. Not much of a storm, but we *do* need the rain. It’s really pretty warm, mid-50’s.

Lotsa birds this morning, but they’re busy eating. The clematis vines have a bunch of inhabitants, probably the sparrows, or maybe chickadees. I don’t see them, just a leaf trembling from something other than the wind, or a feather or seed shell falling from an odd spot.

If you want a ride to the KC Anton Celebration of Life on Saturday in Veneta, I’ll be leaving the shop around 9am and in Florence at about 10am. If you want a ride, within reason I can pick people up or we can meet at some findable spot. Let me know!

Rowan was already at the shop when we got there and we all stood around talking until I looked at the clock, squeaked and flew out the door to the Chamber of Commerce meeting. There wasn’t anything particularly new, just checking in with people, and I had a chowder bowl, which was the special yesterday, ate only ½ and then had the rest for supper!

I did have a talk with the Mary, from the museum, about whether or not the Blue Whale mural has any information in their archives. I’m planning an article and pictures on it, you see. It was a favorite of my Mom’s, and I’ve been worrying that someone would take over the place and paint over it. That’s not likely to happen, since we talked with the owner about it and I have his permission to do the article.

While I was out Rowan got the last of the re-shelving/marking finished. She’s going to double-check the file so that the next time she gets a few minutes with the library this project should be finished, at long last and it’ll just be up to me to keep up with it! She’s been wonderful about getting all of this sorted out! We still have the kid section and the DVD’s to go through, but those are really secondary to the 8 feet by 10 of books that are constantly in use.

When I got back to the shop I sorted, inventoried, priced and set out a bunch of the stuff that we’ve been unearthing: lots of large marbles (glass) and some other toys, cups for the Tablero board, some more jewelry (found some finished pieces in a box!) and some odds and ends like a gauze pouch, a jewelry pouch, one train whistle, etc. I had also run across some of the organizers for the beading table that had disappeared in the move with more of the beads, so I can finish a few projects that have been sitting since last winter waiting. I have one more basket to go of the stuff that I’ve been pulling out, but I decided to stop there, since it was nearly class time. I also found (but didn’t pull out) the rest of the little wooden farm sets. Tempus and I are trying to decide how best to get those out for sale and are probably going to work on how to re-set the kid section today to make it possible.

Tempus had been helping and working on some of his stuff during the day. While Rowan was working on the library he got some boxes out from under the table and stacked where they belong, which is a lot bigger task than it sounds like! He also sorted out some project boxes and got those put away, mostly lights from the holiday stuff.

I got the camera set up and the table cleared and we settled in to class. Willow did get back from Lincoln City, although her car is still acting up, so she, Carlie and Sandra were the class. We’re not sure why Marcia-Beth didn’t make it, yet.

This class ends at 7:30 so Tempus and I did some work in the back. He made enough of a space for me to look through boxes, then he took Willow home while I was dinking with ‘em. I found several things that I knew were there, but hadn’t had found, like the Granitex™. That’s the stuff that I make the rune pendants out of, so we’ll be able to re-stock, finally. I managed to get all the shell projects into one place and tracked down some things that I’ll be working with today.

We got home around 10:30 and went to bed no long after.

Tempus has been making bread this morning and working in the kitchen this morning and I’ve been working on getting the next batch of stuff into the Magick section file. I had to re-write some bits….

Today’s work is going to include re-stacking the back and dealing with the last huge branch of rosemary, along with sorting some of the kid section things that are currently under the tables and seeing what we can do with that area. We also have to get the stuff packed for the ritual tomorrow.

The shop opens at 11am today and we’ll be there through class time. Winter hours – Thursday through Monday, 11am-5pm. If we’re supposed to be closed, but it looks like we’re there, try the door. If it’s open, the shop’s open!

Anja

Hi, folks!

Waldport Chamber of Commerce meeting at noon. Wicca 103 class tonight at 5pm.

10 minutes to sunrise and it’s dim and grey and breezy.

It’s been quiet outside, just the occasional bird, but no fighting and flapping this morning. Not like yesterday. There were several arguments that left feathers flying!

We started yesterday with chores. The kitchen needed to be cleaned up (and still does! …or is that again…), shop dishes done and basketed, fabrics washed, bread made. Most of that happened. Tempus made waffles for us in the middle of the afternoon, right before the herbs workshop time.

I planted a bunch of borage and pea seeds. The birds have dug out the last of the peas, so I’m going to try starting some in paper pots and then put those under the greenhouse tents to get a decent start. I also sorted the seed packets by date and have some being tested for viability that I’ll pull on Sunday.

As the newsletter was going out the rain stated to pick up and it poured steadily for hours. It looked a bit like those Hollywood movies where the rain, too, is perfect. Several times I opened the window to listen.

I spent a while cleaning my altar setup, checking to see what tools need what, hanging up a few more things and digging in the chest of spell bits for some not-yet-set pieces for a couple of healings that need to be done. I also set out a bit of plum brandy for the domovoi. I feel like I might have been neglecting them, although they haven’t complained. They do get their bread several times a week.

..and I just slopped coffee down the front of me. Argh! …

After that I settled in to doing lists, editing some writing and getting stuff set up for the newsletter for the week. Just before suppertime I finished a good draft of the ritual for Saturday. It has to be checked for fleas, but it’s pretty well set.

Tempus and I had hamburger patties, wild rice and vegetables for dinner with some of the new bread while we watched another episode of “6 Wives of Henry VIII”. We gave each other those DVD’s as a Yule gift years ago, but they’re still good. We’re through #3.

After supper I worked with a couple of people online and then did a bit more polishing of good drafts and actually got one submitted.

The clematis is blooming. There’s an album at: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150726 131854148.496132.714224147&type=3&l=b5973a333d I finally got the pictures up yesterday afternoon along with a set of bird pictures here: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150098 915019148.317578.714224147&type=3&l=05e8d3e276

I have a Chamber of Commerce meeting at noon at the Salty Dawg (which has wonderful burgers!) I’ve got to get some of the “Inside Job” flyers put up around town, so that’s the best place to pass ‘em out. Tempus and I have to go through some boxes of fabrics, too, and I need to get him to put away some of the boxes from under the class table. I don’t know if Rowan’s coming in today to work on the library, but this is her usual day. Wicca 103 is supposed to begin at 5pm. We’ll see who makes it today.

The shop opens at 11am today and we’ll be there through class time. Winter hours – Thursday through Monday, 11am-5pm. If we’re supposed to be closed, but it looks like we’re there, try the door. If it’s open, the shop’s open!

Hi, folks!

Herbs Outdoors will be held today! If it’s too wet for the garden, we’ll work on starting seeds.

We’re working on details for Saturday, KC’s Memorial. I’ll be leaving Waldport around 9am and driving through Florence, if anyone from south of that point wants to meet up there, I can pick you up. I’m aiming to get there around 11:30 to have enough time to set up and then take a few minutes to ground.

Tempus moved the bird feeder yesterday. It’s closer and under the porch roof, so the seed shouldn’t get as wet as often. The birds found it already and they’re lowering the seed level by the minute.

When I got up the light had an odd pink tint to it, that made the colors of the pines and cedars and the alder very rich. Around 9, it began to rain for real and off and on the porch roof was running streams. Right now it’s back to just drips.

A hummingbird landed on the feeder landing and taking off again. Then another hummingbird showed up and swooped around the feeder. and they both flew away.

I spent a large part of yesterday trying to get things cleared up enough to actually work. I did get some pictures edited, but that’s really all I accomplished. I did finally do some research late in the evening. Tempus and I both did some of the regular weekly chores, though and he got some packages mailed and errands run.

He still asleep. He’s still working on the tax prep class and finally quit around 4am. I’m probably going to go crawl back in. It’s that kind of day.

The clematis is blooming. I got some pictures yesterday and I’m going to try to put them up this morning.

The shop is closed on Tuesday/Wednesday. Winter hours – Thursday through Monday, 11am-5pm. If we’re supposed to be closed, but it looks like we’re there, try the door. If it’s open, the shop’s open!

Love & Light,
Anja

Hi, folks!

It’s cloudy and cool outside, about 55 degrees, and while you can see leaves waving in the light breeze, tree branches are not moving. They’re talking possible rain this afternoon. That would be good, even if it kept me indoors, which it might not….

Tempus refilled the feeders this morning and I’ve been watching lots of juncos as I’m waking up. I may have seen a bobolink on the feeder a minute ago…that’s the only bird I can find that looks like that and the book says they resemble sparrows enough that people often mistake them. Hmm….

I also saw something, just a glimpse, which was odd. It looked like either a tiny hummingbird in strange colors or a bumblebee on steroids. In size it was ½-way between the two, in gold & black, but moved as fast as a hummer, not more slowly in the way the bumbles do. I say it hovering by the feeder and then it streaked out of view. Anybody have a clue?

Marcia-Beth came in to the shop yesterday! She’s using a walker, since her ankle is in a non-walking cast, but she’s supposed to go in tomorrow for her check-up and next cast. I got to meet her friend who has been taking care of her while she was laid up.

Lezlie also stopped by for a last visit before she heads home to the Bay area. We had fun planning a project and we played with some gifts that she and her mom had bought in the area and some wonderful gloves that her mom made.

Tempus and I spent most of yesterday trying to get the bank stuff sorted out. We’ve been trying to get all of the accounts switched over to West Coast Bank from Bank of America since November. The credit card stuff is still going to BoA so we can’t close the account once and for all. It’s looking like we’ve been being charged the card fees twice, too, since early December, which is annoying, to put it mildly.

I also ironed out the details for the next “movie party”. It’s this coming Sunday, February 12 at 1pm. You can sign up for the party at MoveOn.org, or just show up. This is a free screening of the documentary, “Inside Job”, and we’ll be having discussions after until 6pm. Tempus and I are going to bring the popcorn popper and we always have tea and coffee available.

I realized at 5pm that I’d better clean the class table, fast! It turns into a “parking lot” and there were several projects going, so I scrambled around getting that picked up and cleaned off. There’s a reason that I have all the “herb cloths”, the old white sheets that go over the table. Any time we’re doing something, bits spill, liquids slop, and the fabric keeps stuff off the table surface. I sometimes have to give it a quick wipe with a damp cloth, but usually I just grab up the fabric, shake it outside and take it home for washing, if necessary.

Class had one student last night. I’m not sure what happened to the other couple but the missing “other half” is in school and working, both, so he’s going to have to skip occasionally.

The shop will *not* be closing on Saturday while most of us go to KC Anton’s Memorial, although classes are cancelled for the day. Tempus is going to stay behind, since he was the one that knew KC least well. Tempus and I are planning another small memorial in our garden later in the year.

Fascinating article about solar storms and what is possible here: http://www.popularmechanics.com/science/space/deep /the-looming-threat-of-a-solar-superstorm-6643435 http://www.popularmechanics.com/science/space/deep /the-looming-threat-of-a-solar-superstorm-6643435 I remember one story about the 1859 event from growing up in Baltimore. One reason that fire escapes were built with wooden or mesh treads was that during the 1859 storm a guy got cremated by jumping onto one of the old all-steel stairways! …and the idea of running the telegraph system with just “grid current” rather than batteries… eep!

Today’s work is all catch-up and chores. I’m hoping to get down into the park, later, but that’s only if I finally really wake up. I actually got up over 3 hours ago and this is *just* getting finished!

Tempus made waffles for breakfast. I’m thinking about asking him for another set for supper….

The shop is closed on Tuesday/Wednesday. Winter hours – Thursday through Monday, 11am-5pm. If we’re supposed to be closed, but it looks like we’re there, try the door. If it’s open, the shop’s open!

Love & Light,
Anja

Hi, folks!

Wicca 101 6pm.

It’s another bright, beautiful sunshiny morning. …and it’s supposed to go on for another week and it just feels….wrong. I’m going to be tired of sunshine again before summer even gets here.

A hummingbird is on the feeder and his red throat and green back are glowing in the sunshine. A Stellar Jay flew up and displayed his glowing blue. The bright orangey-red/black/white of the spotted towhees looks dull in comparison!

We had one student again yesterday, so we did a little work on the Imbolc ritual and then worked on some herbs. Safely processing marginally toxic herbs is one thing that a lot of folks don’t do, but really ought to know how, so we worked on the foxglove and wormwood. We also have some new larkspur, flaxseed, pinks and blessed thistle up on the board and some rosemary. I finally gave up on the bag of nameless herbs. They were ground down too far to ID without a good scent. I *think* it was lady’s mantle, but not being sure…. So, more for the Brigdhe’s Flame box… We never found the sweetgrass, darnit…we processed some last summer, and it’s in one of the boxes, but…

1pm was refilling the rock tumblers. The small one has a lot of smaller stones that are in the final polish stage (mostly sunstones, but a couple of quartz and unakite) and the large one is the nephrite in the 2nd grit. We also checked around with the bags of stones that were part-way done to add ones that could use some more work and keep the tumblers full. The thing is that as the processing goes on, the level in the tumblers drops, so I like to consolidate rather than having to tumble them longer. We added a large carnelian and a lavender quartz to the nephrite and a bunch of blue agates to the small tumbler.

The 2pm class started in with taking kyphi to the drying stage, from forming the balls to setting them up to dry. We put that batch together last winter and it’s been aging in a large bottle on the shelf. It went on from there to pulling finished things from the herb dryer, like the newest heather (harvested right before Yule), some pink rose petals, the last cinquefoil from the fall and calendula, putting away the dried stuff and in the case of calendula, replacing it with the 5 new flower heads…and there are about 8 between the plants in the planter boxes out front and the ones in the garden (in the greenhouse tent. I think this morning I’m going to cut a bunch of wormwood.

I’m not sure if Tempus will be staying at the shop during the day or not. If he doesn’t, I’ll be finishing up with some of the embroidered stuff, maybe doing pictures, or maybe just counting and trying to find pieces that have gone awol….

The shop opens at 11 today, and we’ll be there until after the evening class, probably really closing around 9pm. Winter hours – Thursday through Monday, 11am-5pm. If we’re supposed to be closed, but it looks like we’re there, try the door. If it’s open, the shop’s open!

Love & Light,
Anja

Action at Jupiter! Io reappears out of eclipse from Jupiter's shadow at 7:10 p.m. EST. Then Europa emerges from behind Jupiter's eastern limb at 7:48 p.m. EST. Eleven minutes later, Europa vanishes into eclipse by Jupiter's shadow at 7:59 p.m. EST, to reappear at 10:25 p.m. EST. All these events happen on or just off the planet's eastern (following) limb.

Hi, folks!

Wicca 101 at 10am. Herb Workshop at 3pm. 1pm class info below.

It’s cold out there. The porch thermometer is reading just about 33F, although the computer is saying 45. Hmm… It’s amazingly clear out there, again, just a few clouds.

Yesterday’s weather was just beautiful! There were a number of people in who had been out on the beaches and were just raving about it. The moon last night was lovely and Jupiter and Venus are so easy to find in the night sky, now. I forgot to say that since we’re had the clearer weather I’ve been watching for them each evening. A few nights back there was a thin cirrus cloud layer, just enough to surround Venus with a tiny halo, making it look like a gem in a silver setting against velvet of the black sky. Sirius, on the nights before the moon began to wash the stars away, has been putting on a great color show, flashing through the spectrum, scintillating in all the colors, the change from red to brilliant electric blue being the most obvious.

Herbs Workshop ended up being a “finish prep/storage” time. (3 of us) We pulled various herbs like lavender and yarrow down from the shelves, consolidated bottles, labeled bottles and one person got obsessed about sorting the reclaimed bottles. The compounding station is in better order, at least. I’m hoping that I can find a couple of minutes to get the projects that migrated to the work surface back onto the project shelves, today. We also did some grinding on some yarrow, getting it ready for bagging. .

Sewing Workshop had 4 of us. One is working on a sock project, checking for fit and feasibility of design. I’m looking forward to seeing those! I stitched up a small pouch that had a broken zipper. I’m going to make a button closure for it. The pouch base that I had did not fit into the clasp purse frame so I played around with some of the garden fabric samples to see if I had a set that would work. I think I found one, which is two of the St. John’s Wort, the one “green plants” backing fabric and one large yellow rose. The dress that I’m rebuilding got pulled apart, but I can’t find the denim, so that’s put by until I manage to wade through the boxes of fabric. I did some more work on the robe project on the big frame.

In between and then after Tempus and I worked on the Herb Wall. We now know what we have…and what we need! That’s a *big* chunk of work done!

The 1pm class varies by who actually shows up each time. I’m pretty sure it’s going to be on something to do with the rock tumblers, today.

Herbs Workshop may actually start at 2pm. We’ll be working on rosemary, wormwood, sweet grass, delphinium and whatever else we can find, maybe even get into the foxglove.

The shop opens at 11 today, but we’ll be there not long after 9am for classes. Winter hours – Thursday through Monday, 11am-5pm. If we’re supposed to be closed, but it looks like we’re there, try the door. If it’s open, the shop’s open!

Love & Light,
Anja

Hi, folks!

Herbs Workshop at 11am and Sewing Workshop at 3pm.

Gotta love spell-checks and sleepiness combined! That’s where “melted button on pancakes….” came from. Not a tasty-sounding image, no…..

More lovely weather! Bright sunshine, a decent breeze and over 50F on the porch thermometer!

Yesterday was fairly quiet at the shop. We had a steady stream of customers and phone, but nothing out of the ordinary. There are some new things on the bulletin boards, too, that folks brought in and posted, like the Community Garden planning meetings (one of which starts at 10:30am today!!!) and a new flyer by the Vedic Astrologer that I’ve been talking about.

I kept on with counting and tagging things, since Tempus went home to work on the class assignments. The big category yesterday was a bunch of Celtic Knotwork stuff including coloring books, posters, laminated posters, cards and even a knotwork Wheel of the Year!

A couple more pieces of clothing that got tags are tunics, one long (blue) and 3 thigh-knee length (green, blue and copper) that would make good “toss-overs” for ritual clothing and are really inexpensive. We also have a plain white kurta and a black velour cloak. Eventually, I’ll start getting some pictures of these, but I’m trying to find the dressmaker’s dummy so that the clothing isn’t just on a hanger. Ya know… I just might ask Tempus to go fish it out this morning….

Around 6pm we started re-setting the shop for the Sabbat. Around 7, as people were starting to arrive we got the altar set up and then found all the things that were missing. The ritual started on time. I think we had around 10 people, since there was another mix-up with Job Corps. The ritual went well and we had fun with some “wish paper” that Lezlie brought with her, and there were a *lot* of left-over goodies. Anyone who comes to either of the workshops today will be the recipient of that bounty!

There’s also a basket at the shop of pairs of small candles that are a gift to those who come to our Sabbats and workshops. Make sure you get yours!

…and I’m just sitting here cracking up. Someone has a warped a sense of humor as I. If you go to Google Search and then type “askew” and hit enter… well, try it! I’m still giggling.

…and another funny. “There’s no snooze button on a cat that wants breakfast!” with a picture of a cat with a button that says, “snooze” on its forehead….

Herbs Workshop this morning is mostly on prep and lore. We have another large branch of rosemary to process, some delphinium to sort out from rose petals that drifted into it and more herbs that need to come out of the drying rack to be put away and I need to find the bag of sweet grass and pack some more since the wall is completely empty of that!

Sewing Workshop is BYOP (bring your own project) or questions. I’m going to see if what I put together of a pouch base will actually fit into the clasp purse frame that I bought or if I need to re-think and do one from the garden fabric samples. Of course I also have the two embroideries on frames to work on, and I have a dress that I’m going to have to rebuild. One of my denim jumpers decided to tear out along the bottom seam edge, so I’m going to put gussets into the side before sewing it back up. I have to find my denim, though…. And there’s a whole box of cool little fabric scraps if you need some inspiration! (…and enough people who can think of little projects to get you going, too!)

The shop opens at 11 today, although we’re trying to get there early to finish cleaning up from the Sabbat. Winter hours – Thursday through Monday, 11am-5pm. If we’re supposed to be closed, but it looks like we’re there, try the door. If it’s open, the shop’s open!

Love & Light,
Anja

Hi, folks!

Imbolc Sabbat Open Circle tonight at 7pm!

We’re supposed to have another week of good weather and today certainly looks like it. It’s in the upper 50’s on my porch. After listening to the bamboo chime clonking all night I’m watching things waving around outside, particularly the clematis, which is getting ready to bloom. I have to grab some pix of that…. No thin sunlight today! It looks more like the consistency of melted button on pancakes….

Yesterday was one of those days where I was so busy that nothing got done. Paul called in the morning, “just a short call, one question”. It *was* short, for us, only 2 hours…. I got one album of pictures uploaded to Facebook and then had customers and phone calls and Rowan came in to work on the library and Guru from Soul Vacation Resort and… yeah, that kind of day.

Rowan’s down to sorting the History from the Herb sections. The both ended up with green stickers and it’s been interesting trying to get that worked out. It’s starting to look *really* good thanks to her hard work. If you didn’t know… the library is open to anyone as long as the books stay in the shop. Only students and Circle folks can take ‘em out, since I put the library together for their use although you can always ask….

It started with a lot of books that folks were constantly borrowing that we kept at the shop, then when Grandma Crossed it became her memorial, since she is where I got my bibliophile traits from and about 5 shelf feet of the books were from her library. A number of the books belonged to Joel, a high-degree witch that Crossed several years ago. Since we started it, I’ve been adding books that we need and a *lot* of people have donated books. Starting from a 3 foot shelf, we’re up to 8 feet across by either 7 or 8 shelves high! There’s another section for children’s books and videos (a good chunk of which were donated by Willow) and a section of specifically pagan-oriented DVD’s that the shop has purchased.

Finally, nearing class time I started realizing just how few people were going to be there and while we waited until almost ¼ past it was just the one, so we postponed the 2nd ½ of Lesson One to next week. Maybe everyone’s medical issues will sort by then. One’s got the flu. One had ankle surgery last week and is still in bed. One (it turned out) had been dealing with a kid melt-down in Walmart… …and Ginger has had a death in the family. Her son’s girlfriend’s father went down with what was probably a blood clot several days ago and Crossed yesterday. …or I found out about it yesterday and it happened the day before. Our sympathies…

So just as we were making up our minds to postpone two folks from the Monday class were in to try to do some library browsing. They got their research topics picked and a couple of books checked out and then the last student (the kid melt-down) got there. Aren’t kids wonderful? Ok, I’m being sarcastic, but I went through it, too!

We all chatted for a while as I was getting the other album up on Facebook and then headed home and I dropped into bed, getting up for a couple of hours in the middle of the night and sleeping right through again until an hour after the radio turned on.

The albums that are finished are here:

All the newest pictures are at the end of the files because I’m trying to get the uploading done and then edit later.

I did get that fabric out of the window, the blanket rack set up with the tapestries and the whole corner reset. Tempus got the wood re-stacked so just the baskets are left. That helps.

I am *sore*! My shoulders hurt, which I expected, but my wrists and hands are the worst. I can type, but I can’t grip. Weeding… argh….

Today is going to be continuing with the inventory and making sure that things are ready for the Sabbat Open Circle tonight. Bring a finger-food to share, please. Just show up around 7pm. The ritual proper will start by 8pm and be done around 9pm. We can sit around a chat for a while after that, too. We usually have all cleaned up and headed home by 11pm.

The shop opens at 11 today, and we won’t close until it’s time for the Sabbat. Winter hours – Thursday through Monday, 11am-5pm. If we’re supposed to be closed, but it looks like we’re there, try the door. If it’s open, the shop’s open!

Anja

Hi, folks!

Blessed Imbolc!

Wicca 103 at 5pm.

When I came into the study the sun was just peeking over the mountains through the tree clump for the last ½ hour the light has been a little thin, but suddenly as the sun lifted clear of cloud everything is brilliantly lighted. My little glass hummingbird is throwing rainbows around the room. ….Six more weeks of winter? Punxatawney Phil says so, too…. Well, it only just got started, so I guess it makes sense.

I worked on pictures yesterday from right after the newsletter went out until 3pm when I went outdoors. I spent the whole time in weeding, first making some inroads on the stuff that’s trying to creep under the Sweet William and then going after the path border across from the roses. I got that *whole* *thing* done! (pictures soon) Tempus and I also tied up the rosemary that got damaged and took out some of the branches that were dying. Practicing bondage on a shrub?  That means that we have another big wad of rosemary to process.
(again, pictures soon)He also got a bunch of brambleberries extracted from the wormwood and did some other cleaning up, dumping remnants into the compost.

Even if we do have another 6 weeks of winter the plants are starting to come up. The crocosmias in the border that I was weeding are between 1 and 5 inches high already. I’m seeing new growth in various places under what’s there, quite a bit on the Sweet William, just as an example. Several of the roses already have leaf buds that are visible.

A hummingbird on the feeder is doing that licky-flicky thing….

When I came in from the garden I had spent two and a half hours. I’m sore. My wrists are sore from pulling and my shoulders from the strain. I overdid it, quite thoroughly! I staggered in and crawled into bed for a while, finally getting up after we ate supper and getting back to work on the pictures.

One set went up on Facebook. There is an album that I renamed “Pottery and Altar Glassware”. You can find it here: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.14284906 87980.41835.1704231146&type=1&l=0893009106 There will be more!

That was it for the day, actually. Not what I hoped I’d get done, but the border makes up for a lot….

Today I have to finish re-setting the corner by the reading table. The blanket rack needs to go over there and Tempus is going to re-stack the wood behind the display table. …and I need to pull down the fabric that I was using for a backdrop… We have the next session of Wicca 103 tonight.

The shop opens at 11 today, although we’ll be there through class time. Winter hours – Thursday through Monday, 11am-5pm. If we’re supposed to be closed, but it looks like we’re there, try the door. If it’s open, the shop’s open!

Love & Light,
Anja

Hi, folks!

Blessed Imbolc!

Herbs Outdoors today at 3pm, in the gardens.

A ruby-throated hummingbird was sitting on the feeder enjoying himself, then Tempus popped the door open to take the seed-feeder out to put up. The porch roof has been dripping, but the thermometer says it’s near 50F and the sun is trying to peek through, finally.

Yesterday started so late that I didn’t get a whole lot done, but Tempus and I spent several hours taking pictures at the shop. If you see an odd piece of fabric hanging in the window, it’s the one that I was using for a backdrop and I forgot to take it down! We worked out way through the new pottery and candles, mostly, but I also did a whole set of pictures of my blackwork embroidery.

We’re re-arranging that area again, now that we have some of the stock from the other shop whittled down to the point that we can move. I have a blanket rack that I’m going to get the sarong/tapestries off of the clothing bar at the other end of the shop that will go into the front window.

Tempus hung up a few more pictures and got some of the hanging pieces of stock up, too. The big metal sunface is up by the Books of Shadows section and it looks great. There are a couple of small pottery masks and a moon plaque up by the altar cloths, too.

We got home late enough to just eat dinner and then do quiet things. I’m spending some time translating some favorite pagan songs of mine from Russian to English so that I can learn the lyrics. Tempus was finding new projects to do. He’s talking about a “rocket stove”, now.

Today I have to process the pictures and Tempus has to study. We’ll be out in the gardens from 3-4, working, and then I’m going to try another cookie recipe tonight, and I’m going to try to get another of the ornament chests sorted out.

The shop is closed today. Winter hours – Thursday through Monday, 11am-5pm. If we’re supposed to be closed, but it looks like we’re there, try the door. If it’s open, the shop’s open!

Love & Light,
Anja
