This little guy created a stir amongst the locals, they saw the face and little man on the back of the moth. Being a bit superstitious and this being part of a burial ground it could have been an ancestor.

No, it's just an interestingly marked moth. I have no knowledge of moths outside of North America, but I would bet there are entomologists at your local universities who could identify it for you.

Kathy, no libraries near us here. I might be able to find something in Australia on my way through. The big cities in Papua New Guinea might have something but I'm never get a chance to get to one of them, & would probably cost a small fortune for a book.

I believe this is a Death's Head Hawkmoth. Very unnerving image, isn't it! Especially I bet in such a location. Nice shot though. -kevin :)
